Kamla Mills-Fire at Kamala Mill Compound:- 15 people were killed and 16 were injured when a fierce fire broke out late Thursday night at the one 1-restaurant, London Taxi Bar and Mojo Pub located in Mumbai’s Kamala Mill compound. Among the dead, 12 women are also included. The injured have been admitted to different hospitals, the condition of two is very serious. King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEM) has confirmed 14 deaths. Police have registered a case under section 304 of IPC against 1-above restaurant. The reason for the fire is not known at present. The fire has been suppressed and the work of cooling is in progress.
The fire was first engaged in 1-hour restaurant. Its bamboo and plastic shade started burning. This fire spread to two bars-Mojo and London taxi in the second building. The people in the restaurant were trying to save themselves by hiding in the washroom and trapped in it. They did not find the way to go. Most people are killed in the washroom area. Those who were trapped in the upper floors managed to go to the nearby building, from where they were saved by the fire brigade with the help of a special ladder.
The police officer said, “Most of the dead are women who came to attend a party at the restaurant located on the terrace.” As soon as the incident was reported, 8 vehicles of fire brigade were sent on the spot. Dean of KEM Hospital told that 21 people were brought here in the wounded condition. Meanwhile, Breach Candy Hospital has confirmed the arrival of 10-15 injured people. “Some people were seriously injured, while some people are having difficulty breathing,” an official said.
BMC Commissioner Ajay Mehta and Additional Municipal Commissioner I A Kundan also visited the spot. Here, the deputy chief of fire station K V Hivarele has said that the London Taxi Bar accident will be investigated.
The BMC’s disaster management unit said, “On the spot, eight fire engines, 3 jets, and five tankers were sent immediately.” Employees of Fire Brigade were also able to save the office buildings located in the vicinity. As soon as the fire started, the staff fled outside, they were so scared that they could not tell anything about the incident. The fire brigade got information about the fire at 12.30 pm. The fire was extremely alarming that firefighters had to use special stairs to reach the upper floor.
The newly opened terrace bar ‘London Taxi’ is very popular in Mumbai youth. The open floor of the second floor was covered only a few days ago. After the construction work, there was too much wood lying on the floor and possibly the fire increased. It takes a long line to enter this pub on Friday and Saturday night.
